Topical Analysis: The recent escalation between Visa and China UnionPay displays Visa's growing frustration with the emergence of a new major player in the Asia's payment processing landscape and also with China's refusal to open the Chinese retail payments market. However the move is not at all suitable to bring Visa any closer to a solution and even might backfire. Besides providing data the report analyses possible consequences of the escalation.

Bank the hitherto Unbanked

Comment: India and Philippines proceed in mobile banking and find an efficient tool to reach out to the countries' large unbanked population. Unlike most other banks with a mobile proposition, banks in these countries promote large volumes of low-value transactions. Mobile top-up and balance enquiries are still major revenue drivers.

Comment: Retail Branches are getting smaller and highly automated and banks actively try to migrate customers to the alternative channels. However most banks still cannot imagine getting rid of the human element in the branches, as customers still largely demand human interaction, when it comes to advisory and buying a product. The generation Y might change that.
